Fred
Gallo is a clinical psychologist who works in Hermitage,
Pennsylvania. He's been in private practice since 1977, and
also conducts psychological testing and serves on staff of a local
hospital. Fred has
utilized both traditional and recent approaches to psychotherapy,
including cognitive therapy, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP),
and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization And
Reprocessing). Fred,
who I interviewed at the Third Annual International Energy
Psychology Conference, sponsored by the Association for
Comprehensive Energy Psychology, is a major supporter and author
in the new field of Energy Psychology, a term he coined.
Dr. Gallo has written three books on
the topic, including Energy Psychology, Energy Diagnostic and
Treatment Methods, and Energy Tapping.
A revolution in the way we understand how emotional
distress is stored and maintained in the body-mind may be leading
us into a radical change in the way we practice psychotherapy and
a radical change in the efficacy of psychological treatment and
our expectations for overcoming damaging life experiences.
The primary assumption which underlies the energy
psychology approach to treating emotional distress is, "The
cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's
energy system." The
energy system being referred to in this article is the meridian
system, as found in Chinese medicine.
The meridian system -- subtle energy channels which connect
and influence the functioning of bodily organs -- has been used
effectively for thousands of years to treat physical conditions
(diseases) through therapies such as acupuncture and shiatsu
massage. Various
approaches to mind-body healing, including relieving physical and
emotional stress through methods such as Jin Shin Do and Jin Shin
Jyitsu, also work by affecting the flow of energy in the
meridians.
If a disruption in the energy system causes negative
emotions, then correcting the disruption should eliminate the
negative emotions. A
disruption in the energy flow through the meridian system can be
corrected through stimulating the flow by physically
"tapping" on the surface of the body on places known as
acupoints, places on the body through which the meridian energy
can be affected.
In fact, hundreds if not thousands of psychological
practitioners have already been able to validate this approach,
and a multiplicity of energy psychology methods are now emerging,
with names like Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Emotional Freedom
Techniques (EFT), Be Set Free Fast (BSFF), Energy Diagnostic And
Treatment Methods (EDxTM), and many others.
Energy psychology techniques have been used to treat a wide
variety physical and emotional disturbances, including phobias and
fears, grief, addictions, physical pain, diseases such as lupus
and colitis, sexual abuse, guilt, conditions such as asthma and
constipation, and post traumatic stress disorder.
Dramatic and rapid alleviation of post traumatic stress
disorder has been documented by Gary Craig, the developer of EFT,
for
Vietnam
veterans, who had not responded to any other previously available
therapy.
